The winged heart is an ancient Sufi symbol from India. It was chosen by
Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan as the seal of the Sufi Order of the West, a
mystic branch of Islam, at its founding in 1910. The symbol is a heart
with a five-pointed star and wings rising from the heart. It is the divine
light, which is represented by the five-pointed star and by its placement
inside the heart, which signifies the heart receiving the light of God. The
wings show the heart's liberation and ascension to God.

A description of the symbol, from the Gatha: "As in the Egyptian symbology,
wings are considered a symbol of spiritual progress, the heart with wings
expresses that the heart reaches upward towards heaven."
